Small Business Start-Ups

Applicants who qualify and are approved may receive up to $500 as a small business grant to be used for initial capital, tools, and equipment necessary to begin their small business.  To qualify an applicant must:

  • Complete CJF’s 12-week Academy for Business Creation course (licensed curriculum from Academy for Creating Enterprise) which teaches principles of successful small business management;
  • Complete CJF’s series of 6 Financial Literacy lessons in their home;
  • Save some of the initial capital needed for their business themselves—generally less than 10% of the capital needed;
  • Demonstrate an ability to use written records to track income and expenses by keeping a personal or family written budget record for at least 1 month;
  • Prepare a viable business plan with the help of CJF staff members, complete with estimated financials and marketing plan;
  • Agree to on-going weekly mentoring by CJF staff for at least 1 year following receiving the grant; and
  • Agree to participate in monthly alumni chapter meetings where grant recipients have the opportunity to share learnings and best practices with each other and learn from successful small business operators.

Business Creation

CJF also operates its own businesses to increase its sustainability and to create employment opportunities.  Current businesses that CJF has created include (1) a private international elementary school (Zion International School of Phnom Penh) for children ages Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 4, with a current enrollment of over 700 students and employing over 180 individuals; and (2) a tourism travel agency (Bountiful Asia Travel & Tour) to assist travelers with tours, lodging, and transportation in Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

In the fall of 2015, CJF launched a brand new not-for-profit private English-language international school near Russian Market in Tuol Tom Pong, Phnom Penh, Cambodia. ZISPP provides a first-class environment in which students can learn and develop, and prepares its students with the knowledge, values, and problem-solving, social, and communication skills needed to be leaders in a new digital economy in Cambodia and the world.
